♥--Chapter 1--♥
The sun was slowly fading away as the darkness of the night made its way, suppressing the bright colors of the sky. The light seemed to fight for the impossible, spreading shades of orange and red in despair, making the sight incredibly special for the two friends walking out of the movie theater. The brunette looked up at the sky, her lips curling as the boy next to her started commenting the movie they had just seen. It's not like she was not used to it. In fact, she was well aware he always had something to say about anything and everything, and she liked it this way. She turned to him, staring at his features, watching his lips moving but too lost in her thoughts to actually get his words to sink in.
If it was not for this guy, she had no idea where she'd be. He was, perhaps, the only real friend she's ever had, and the best at that. She couldn't tell exactly how they became so close, because as long as she could remember, they had always been friends ; from the time that choosing friends depended on geography, until it was all about having a confident. Even now, after high school, their friendship had not changed if only, it had turned out into a special bond she couldn't explain. They used to be neighbors, when they both lived at their parents', and had decided to share an appartment when it was time to fly with their own wings. And through the challenges of life, their relation had succeeded to survive the misunderstandings and the fights, and that in itself was enough for her to realize he was a keeper.
"What do you think?" he asked, taking her out of her thoughts.
She moved her head slightly, getting back into the moment and smiled to him in an awkward way.
"Oh, I agree with you, Jared."
It was not really a lie, she probably did, she just didn't listen. Her cheeks turned red when he looked at her, his facial expressions clearly showing he knew she had no idea what he was talking about. He smiled mischievously at her shyness and laughed lightly.
"You didn't hear a single word of what I said, right Liv?"
In a moment of shyness, she moved her head away, too embarrassed to stare at him in the eyes and this time, he laughed louder, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her to his side friendly, his other hand mattering her hair. She made a grimace and tried to push him away with a groan, making his laughter increase even more and he let go.
"I hate when you do that." Livia commented, trying to fix her hair.
"That's why I do it." he admitted, half-smiling. "Ice cream?"
His best friend nodded and they both headed to the next street, walking slowly.
"Where's your boyfriend tonight?" he wondered, breaking the silence.
She shrugged. "Hanging out with his friends."
It was the longest relationship of her life, and somehow she had a hard time understanding why love stories always turned out to be so tasteless after a while. Chad was the only guy she hung around long enough to feel that although love was there, the passion had gone away, and would never return. Still, she enjoyed his company and the affection she gave and received, and she came to the conclusion that being in love was also being free. And she was. He let her hang out with her best friend as much as she wanted, and he changed his mind from it by partying with his boys. Livia sighed and her lips curled slightly at the memories of them, locked in his room for days when they just started going out. As long as she knew love was there, nothing else mattered, because that's what all the couples go through.
"How is it between you two?" Jared wondered with a frown.
"Good, actually." she nodded.
When she thought about her relationship with Chad, that was the only word coming in her mind ; It was doing good. Not awesome, not bad.. just good.
"You still love him?"
"Yes, Columbo, I love him." Livia giggled at her best friend's worries.
When Chad had learned his girlfriend was going to be living with Jared, he got angry. So much Livia thought she'd see a fist fight between the only two men of her life. Gladly, she calmed her boyfriend by adding that Jared had a girlfriend whom he loved more than anything. Chad had muttered under his breath, and although Livia knew he was not completely pleased with the way things were turning out, he had accepted it. He had proposed they shared an apartment together, but Livia thought it was too early in their relationship to destroy it this way, and she packed her stuff to live with her best friend instead. Even now, she was glad she had.
"Oh, I have something to show you!" Jared asked as they reached the dairy. "Let's order first."
He opened the door and Livia smiled at how gentleman he was, stepping foot inside. She shivered, the temperature considerably low compared to the warmth of the summer evening. Jared walked up to the counter and ordered what he always did, a plain chocolate ice cream cone while Livia's eyes roamed on the menu.
"What do you want?"
She bitted her bottom lips, almost ignoring her best friend, considering the options. Everything seemed tasty, and she sighed ; she always had a hard time to make a decision, even for very simple things.
"Okay, I want a sorbet." she expressed after a moment.
"Which flavor?"
The girl behind the counter sent her an annoyed glance, but Livia only moved her head on the side, trying to decide.
"A mix of everything?" she told, getting rid of this decision quickly.
The girl sighed and Jared turned to Livia with a grin, containing himself to laugh at her. He couldn't help but think his best friend was incredibly cute when she was torn into silly choices. After all those years, it still made him smile. Jared paid and they both grabbed their order and got back into the hot weather.
"Thanks." she said, her mouth full. "Okay it's too good. Wanna taste?"
Jared laughed subtly but moved his head from left to right. He was not really into changes, and his choice of a dessert clearly reflected most of his life. If anyone was predictable, it was surely him, and he liked it this way.
"You wanted to show me something?"
"Oh!"
He dived his hand in the pocket of his jeans and took out a small grey box. Livia noticed and immediately understood it had to do with a jewel. As he opened it, not without trouble because of the ice cream cone in his other hand, she saw a gold ring with a small diamond and her eyes got larger at the view.
"Oh My God! You'll ask for her hand?" she almost squealed, making Jared's lips curl into a grin as he nodded.
"It's time, isn't it?" he asked. "After five years together, I think this is the next move."
Livia rolled her eyes with a smile, shaking her head lightly from left to right. He was not asking his girlfriend to marry him out of an impulse, or from a sudden rush of love, but simply because of the way things were supposed to go. She should have thought about it ; she knew him way too well.
"Jared, you're the most..." she stopped herself and he looked at her, his eyebrows raised up, waiting for her next words. "... down-to-earth guy I know." she finally sighed.
He only shrugged, taking it like a compliment and not a criticism.
"Where's your imagination? I mean, isn't there a special feeling twisting your stomach when you think of her? Don't you just come to the conclusion that she's the only girl you want to spend you life with, when your eyes meet?"
Jared stopped walking and turned to her, surprised she took this so seriously and finally asking himself the questions Livia had pointed out. After some seconds, he shrugged.
"Well, yes, of course." he replied, putting the box back into his pocket.
"Then show her, idiot." she advised.
Jared's smile grew as he noticed the discouraged look on his best friend's face and once again, he grabbed her shoulder and brought her closer, their sides hitting lightly, except this time, he couldn't reach for her hair since he had only one free hand.
"You know you're amazing?" he teased her.
"Yea, pretty much." she joked.
They both started laughing and when silence took place between them, Jared did like he usual does and broke it quickly.
"I think we should go back home and look at old pictures."
"You're such a girl, sometimes." she grinned. "Okay, let's go."
"First one at the car gets to drive!" he screamed as he started running.
"You're cheating!" she replied, still giving in the game as she started running after him.
She didn't think an other second about her boyfriend, and his girlfriend didn't come to his mind. When they were together, it seemed like the whole world was way less important than it really was.
