CHAPTER 1 [

The sun was rising, different shades of red, yellow and orange illuminating the horizon and I took a big breath of fresh morning air. The road was desert, and I liked the silence it was bringing. The only sounds I could hear came from the car, and the girl sitting next to me. She was sleeping, her head laying on her own shoulder, letting out a light and regular breathing. Her mouth was slightly open and it made me smile. If I had to keep one person forever with me, it would be Livia, because when you find the perfect best friend, you need to do everything to keep her. And that's exactly what she was to me.
There was something more between us, I knew it, but I didn't want to admit it, for the simple reason that you don't spoil that kind of friendship with love feelings. I've had my heart broken, and she had her share of pain, too, and in no way I was going to hurt her. It was something I could never handle : it would be worse than myself being hurt, I knew it. I could never live with that guilt. Of course, there are some sort of tension in every kind of relationships, but if I admitted my feelings for her, and if somehow, we'd become a couple, I could hurt her even more, and I was not going to let myself do that.
I took a big breath. I was not even sure I made sense, but often, my head and my heart argued, and you know who wins every time.
She moved in her sleep, licked her lips and let her head fall on my shoulder this time. I smiled more, enjoying the physical contact and tiny locks of her hair danced around, tickling my cheek and forehead. The wind brought her unique scent to my nostrils, an odor I couldn't define, a mix of her usual perfume and her body aroma.
There were no parents, no friends, no chores... nothing else but Livia and I on some sort of crazy road trip. The guilt of leaving everything behind was not as strong anymore, and I could feel it was the same for the brunette sitting next to me. It was more than freedom we were looking for. We were looking for the truth. Little did I know, we were going to find way more than that.
Glancing at her, I noticed the smile on her lips and I knew she was slowly waking up from a nice dream. She put her hand on my thigh making me jump slightly and I heard her giggle subtly.
"Sorry." she whispered before sitting back up and stretching herself with a yawn.
I didn't reply. If I wanted to be honest, I liked her touch.
"Where are we?" she wondered with a frown.
"There's a town down the road. We'll be there soon." I pointed.
"Next time, we need to get a hotel room. A car isn't a comfortable bed."
I laughed lightly at her remark. It was exactly her to complain about something like that. Not having a good night sleep was really something she hated.
"Alright, we'll get a room tonight, if that's what you want."
"That's what I want." she affirmed.
I liked that about her. She always knew what she wanted, she had an opinion on everything, and she had arguments to support them. She was the kind of smart you don't want to mess with.
"Alright." I gave in, the right side of my lips curling into half a smile.
The rest of the ride was silent, we didn't have to talk to be connected, and it was not making us uncomfortable. It was very frequent that we were together in the same room, and that no word would be exchanged. Sometimes, we were almost motionless, not doing anything but thinking, and just the fact that we were together was enough to make us feel secure and happy.
Soon, I saw the name of the town we were entering on a wood sign. Hope. The name in itself brought some sort of comforting feeling inside of me, as if Life was on our side. Under the name, was written the motto. I didn't have time to read it, but it was not important, because it escaped sweetly from Livia's lips.
"A Slice of the Good Life"
I took a glance at her with a smile and focused back on the road. Hope was a very small town and somehow, I felt almost at home. We were not supposed to stop so soon, but I saw my best friend's eyes get bigger when she noticed a small restaurant on the corner of the street and could almost hear her stomach screaming. Without a word, I pulled to the right and parked the car before Livia turned to me, her eyes glowing and her lips curled. She bit her bottom one and sent me a grin.
"You know me so well." she expressed, quickly wrapping her arms around me.
My hands quickly left the wheel to hug her back, the smell of her hair filling my nostrils. I wanted to keep her in my arms, but she got out of my embrace, probably very hungry. Her purse on her shoulder, she got out of the car and ran inside the restaurant. A bell rang when we entered and I followed her to a small table, sitting in front of her on a dark red bench. She grabbed the menu and started reading it, her eyes roaming on the different meals until someone walked to our table. I expected a pretty woman with a notepad but instead, my eyes met a tall and thin brown haired guy. His eyes though were not looking my way.
"Did you make a choice?"
Livia's eyes were still glued to the cardboard she had in hands until she shook her head and put it down.
"I'll have the waffle with all the fruits you can find." she informed. "With a coffee, of course."
The young man smiled to her and she replied by smiling back. I was not smiling.
"I've never seen you before." he stated.
"Is this town that small?" Livia laughed. "We're on a road trip. Long story."
"I'm Kyle." he informed, putting his hands in his pockets in a shy movement.
"I'm Livia, and this is Jared."
Kyle looked at me for a second, his smile suddenly not as large, but he quickly draw his attention back to my best friend. They had a little chat while I remained focused on the menu, trying not to let my anger show. After a while, I couldn't stand it anymore. They had just met and he was already flirting with her, but that was not the worst : she was letting him do it.
"I'll have two eggs and bacon and please bring white bread and lots of coffee." I pressed.
With one last smile sent to Livia, he slightly nodded and got further of the table.
"That was so rude, Jare." my best friend whispered with a frown, leaning on the table to be sure no one else would hear.
"Two coffees." Kyle said when he came back, putting our cups in front of us.
"Thanks."
I looked at my best friend's features when she talked to him, and the message was clear, she was interested, which made me even angrier. I inhaled deeply and took a sip of my coffee, burning my lips in the process. I let out a cuss word in a low tone and Livia half-smiled to me. I liked when she looked at me like that, and I smiled back to her.
"And you call me clumsy." she let out, laughing lightly.
"You are!" I laughed with her.
I had almost forgotten Kyle when he came back with our plates. Livia thanked him and I mumbled the same without enthusiasm.
"Are you guys staying in town for a while?" he wondered. "Because I'm having a party tonight, so if you want, you could come."
I opened my mouth to deny the invitation but didn't have time.
"Sure!"
My best friend stared at the new guy like she had known him since forever... like I was not even there. I didn't want to go, but I sure would, if only to be sure he'd never lay his hands on her.
